Humanities 101 is an innovative program that provides free university-level courses to non-traditional learners who experience barriers to learning, with a focus on low-income and vulnerable people. The program helps people step back from the forces of poverty and provides them with the reflective space and critical thinking tools necessary to become fully engaged citizens.

The Program:
Humanities 101 offers an opportunity for low-income, non-traditional adult learners to take a university course at no charge.  The program was previously called Storefront 101 and had been offered in conjunction with St. Mary’s, U of C, Ambrose University College and the Mustard Seed.  The program is now being run exclusively through St. Mary’s University College.  We need your help in referring suitable applicants.  Participants are required to be at least 18 years of age with a minimum Grade 8 level reading/writing ability and no previous university experience.

The Course:
We are currently offering "Story and Meaning," a spring course that will introduce students to the study of literature, history, art and philosophy.  Students have the option to take the course for credit or audit.  It will run for eight weeks beginning March 11, 2013.  Students are required to attend class every Monday and Thursday from 1 - 3:30 pm.  A group lunch is included before each class from 12 - 1 pm.  Participants have access to all of the university facilities (library, fitness centre, computers, etc.) while registered in this program and all books and materials are provided at no cost to the students.

St. Mary's University College Campus: 14500 Bannister Road SE, just off McLeod Trail across from the Fish Creek-Lacombe Transit Station.

Admission Procedure:
Potential participants are required to complete an application form and attend an admissions interview.  All information provided during this process will be kept in strict confidence.  The application forms are available through the Program Coordinator or here.

Friends of Humanities 101 has been established to support two goals:

1. Gather funding to resume the Humanities 101 program on the St. Mary’s campus in Spring 2013. Program costs include tuition, books, nutritious hot meals before class, travel to class, childcare, instructors’ fees and administrative costs.

2. Provide scholarships for students who have moved on from Humanities 101 to formal degree studies at St. Mary’s University College. Scholarships will contribute toward tuition, fees and books and will be awarded on a competitive application basis.

This spy-themed evening featuring a wine and scotch tasting, a lecture about the spy era by Dr. Dawn Miller of the U of C, as well as a silent auction and play gambling, raised more than $2,400 for Humanities 101. Students at St. Mary’s University College have thrown their support behind Humanities 101, an innovative program that provides free university-level courses to non-traditional learners.

The Students’ Legislative Council recently donated 100 per cent of the proceeds from its annual Black and White Affair to Humanities 101. Ticket sales and donations totalling $2,100 were raised through the event. read more
