The Installation of Dr. Gerry Turcotte
President of St. Mary’s University
(October 14, 2011) — Dr. Gerry Turcotte was officially invested with the powers and responsibilities of the office during his installation today as St. Mary’s University’s third President and Vice-Chancellor.
Students, staff, faculty, the Board of Governors, and friends of St. Mary’s filled St. Mary’s Cathedral to witness the historic event, giving Dr. Turcotte and his family a warm welcome during the installation.
The installation opened with a procession of academic dignitaries, including St. Mary’s faculty and presidents and representatives from colleges and universities across Canada, followed by the liturgical procession.
Mr. Joe Ladouceur, Chair of St. Mary’s Board of Governors, presented Dr. Turcotte to the Most Reverend Bishop Frederick Henry, St. Mary’s Chancellor, for the declaration of office. Dr. Turcotte then took his Oath of Office and was robed in the presidential regalia by Presidents Emeriti Dr. David Lawless and Dr. Terrence Downey.
The installation concluded with Dr. Turcotte delivering an inaugural address outlining his vision for the institution. “St. Mary’s finds itself today: a tower of strength, a model of stability and creativity, ready to build and grow towards its second 25 years. And to do this we will soon be developing new academic programs, building new facilities, crafting new alliances, and all this in the context of a small, student-centred, faith-based Catholic institution that prides itself on small class sizes, attention to the whole person, and a deep concern for social justice and the ethics of responsibility.”
Following the ceremony, guests were invited to celebrate with Dr. Turcotte, students, staff and faculty at a reception. Guests came together while enjoying the delicious food of St. Mary’s own Tim Babey.
