Religious Education Programs for Catholic Teachers and Administrators
St. Mary’s offers two professional development programs for Catholic Educators: Diploma in Religious Education (DRE) & Certificate in Catholic Educational Leadership (CCEL). CCEL is a 12 credit program. DRE is a 30 credit program. You may complete one course or the entire program and can begin at any time (depending on individual course dates). There is no time limit to compete the required coursework for the diploma or certificate.
Catholic Educators (DRE/CCEL) courses now available for registration!
- If you have never taken a course at St. Mary’s University, you must apply for admission online through Apply Alberta.
- You will be asked to create an account and pay a one-time $100 application fee. When prompted to choose a discipline of study at St. Mary’s University, choose Catholic Educators, then either GCCEL or GDRE.
- Submit a copy of your teaching certificate to sarah.twomey@stmu.ca or by fax at (403) 531-9136. You will receive an admission confirmation and log in id and password for access to St. Mary’s student portal My.StMU.
- Once you receive your emailed acceptance, log onto: https://ss.stmu.ca/SelfService/Home.aspx to register using the log in credentials provided to you at the time of your initial application.
- Click Register. Select the year/term and the course(s) you wish to register for and add them to your cart.
- Click next to complete the registration process.
- Completion of a total of 30 credits
- Completion of EDPA 591: Philosophy of Catholic Education
- Completion of 27 credits chosen from the GDRE 3 credit courses below

Graduation
Upon completion of the program requirements, students submit an Application to Graduate. When their eligibility to graduate has been verified, they will receive a written confirmation notice. They will be invited to receive their certificate or diploma at the next convocation ceremony.
- Completion of a total of 12 Credits
- Completion of 6 credits from the mandatory course list below and 6 credits from any of the Catholic Educators Courses (GDRE 3 credit courses or GCCEL 1.5 credit courses).
