The Association for Catholic Colleges and Universities in Canada (ACCUC) affirms its support of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. We therefore strongly object to the Federal Government’s unreasonable requirement that institutions wishing to access taxpayer funded grants under the Canada Summer Jobs initiative must sign an attestation that denies their own rights under the Charter. These include the right to “(a) freedom of conscience and religion” and “(b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression….” It is especially important that institutions for which academic freedom is a governing and unassailable directive be defenders of this abiding principle.
