Take A course for personal interest or professional development
Register early to ensure placement. If you have never taken a course at St. Mary’s University, you must apply for admission online through ApplyAlberta. You will be asked to create an account and to pay a one-time $100 application fee. When prompted to choose a discipline of study at St. Mary’s University, choose Catholic Educators, then either CCEL or DRE. Once accepted into the program, you will be able to register for your course at my.StMU. You will be required to provide a copy of your valid Alberta Teaching Certificate to St. Mary’s Education Department before proceeding with the course. PLEASE NOTE: All course information listed may be subject to change. Possible changes include instructor, time, location and course cancellations. Please email info@stmu.ca if you are considering taking a course, to ensure its availability.
Credits earned may be applied to the Diploma in Religious Education (DRE) or a certificate in the NEW CERTIFICATE IN CATHOLIC EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP (CCEL) at St. Mary’s University in Calgary, Alberta. For more information, please email info@stmu.ca
Fall Courses – 2021
EDPA 591 – 1: Philosophy of Catholic Education
Online | Course Fee: $792 | 3 Credits
Sep 20 – Dec 6 | Instructor: Elisabeth MacDonald
Study major educational and theological topics and their implications for a philosophy of Catholic schools, and the articulation of what a Catholic school should be in a pluralistic society. Emphasis will be on how to integrate a Catholic vision into all aspects of school life.
Elisabeth is an experienced Catholic educator and administrator. She has been an instructor in St. Mary’s University DRE and REAP programs, as well as in the Bachelor of Education program. She has a Masters in both Counseling and in Religious Education.
TQS Recognition
These courses are recognized as transferable to other degree granting institutions listed on Transfer Alberta website transferalberta.ca. These courses can be submitted to the Teacher Qualification Service (TQS) of the Alberta Teachers’ Association for approval.
Winter Courses – 2022
EDPA 593 H(3-0): Philosophical Basis of Moral Education
Online | Course Fee: $792 | 3 Credits Jan 17 – April 11 | Instructor: Elisabeth MacDonald A study of the educational implications of the following concepts: faith and moral values, the distinctiveness of a Christian morality and moral development. The course will include a critical appraisal of current moral development theories from a Christian viewpoint. Special emphasis will be placed on conscience and decision making. Some areas of current Christian moral concern will be explored.
