About this Event

St. Mary’s University New Student Orientation (NSO) is an event for all new students starting in Winter 2020. You’ll learn about the resources and opportunities you have as a student, meet your instructors and classmates, learn to find your way around campus and get organized. Ask questions, get advice, and chat with current students as they spend the day with you as your orientation leaders.

Check-In | 9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

Meet your Orientation Leader and other members of your group.

President’s Address | 9:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Join your fellow new students and meet your Student Legislative Council and the President of the University.

Campus Tour | 10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Learn your way around campus and find your classrooms! Campus tours will be led by your orientation leaders, so you’ll also learn some inside tricks for navigating life on campus.

University 101 | 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Join psychology professor Dr. Alana Ireland in learning about what you can expect from your professors and vice versa, and tips to succeed in your post-secondary journey.

Advising & Academic Success | 11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Team Lead for academic advising, Maggie Lachica is the perfect person to learn about academic supports and resources available to you. From academic advisors to peer mentoring, there are supports at each level to ensure you are successful.

BBQ Lunch | 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Fuel up for the rest of the day and spend some time hanging out with your orientation group. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-friendly options will be available for those who selected them when registering.

Breakout Sessions | 12:00 p.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Our library services specialists will walk you through the online research system and library research skills you can use for those important essays and research projects.

Breakout Sessions | 12:00 p.m. – 1:15 p.m.

Pick between one of the following sessions to attend. Choices include:

Money Matters: Budgeting, Financial Aid, and More

Learn about costs you can anticipate in university, financial aid options, and how to budget for tuition, student fees, living, and other expenses.

Experiential Learning and International Opportunities

Itching to travel? Learn about the various opportunities for travel study, studying abroad, and internships here at St. Mary’s and how it can benefit your future.

Wrap-Up & Raffle Draw | 1:15 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Join us to wrap up the day and draw for a gift card to the Bookstore or the Bistro. You must be present in order to claim your prize.

  • $50 Bistro gift card
  • $25 Bistro gift card

This will also be an opportunity to pick up your St. Mary’s I.D. card and your UPass for the Calgary Transit system, or drop by the bookstore to buy your textbooks and course materials.
