SUMMARY:Faculty Colloquium Series featuring Dr. Harrison Campbell\, Assistant Profession\, Education
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Campbell completed his PhD at the University of Calgary in 2024 and shortly after joined StMU as an assistant professor of Education. He has been the recipient of many awards including two Queen Elizabeth II Scholarships and a Pre-Doctoral Killiam Laureate prize from The Killiam Trusts. His talk will discuss possibilities for developing literacy in secondary students using tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) and the genre of Literary Role Play (LitRPG) in classrooms. TTRPGs will be discussed through the lens of Fiasco\, a collaborative and improvisational learning experience\, and LitRPG will be discussed using the Dungeon Crawler Carl series which has not only redefined the genre but has also introduced it to legions of new readers. Come learn how TTRPG’s and LitRPG’s fit within literacy teaching pedagogies in secondary English Language Arts and spread a joy of reading among students through play!

DESCRIPTION:Session #2 Survivance & Resilience with Elder Doreen Bergum  \n\n\n\n\n\nFocus is on A Metis Perspective on Colonization\, Resilience\, and Renewal that will be presented by Metis Elder Doreen Bergum. Elder Bergum has previously been an invited Elder to showcase her culture with the St. Mary’s community in the past. We have the honour of bringing Elder Bergum back to the StMU community to speak on this topic. This session will also give insight to helping understand the importance of community\, kinship\, and language in Metis resurgence. It is to recognize the impacts of colonization on Metis communities while highlighting the strength of cultural continuity\, language\, and community through an interactive session.
