SUMMARY:PUBLIC LECTURE SERIES - Transformational Initial Teacher Education: Settler Colonial Contexts w/ Kami Hazlewood
DESCRIPTION:Kami Hazlewood (PhD candidate) is a non-Indigenous Australian\, early career academic\, and researcher in the field of teacher policy\, practice and education in Indigenous education. Teaching pre-service and in-service teachers in Indigenous education using the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers to develop and deliver transformative education experiences\, she works with policy-makers and educational professionals to improve the way policy informs teacher education and practice in Australia. \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Kami addresses the issue of teacher professional standards in settler-colonial contexts being increasingly positioned as mechanisms for advancing Indigenous education and supporting national reconciliation. In Alberta and Australia\, these frameworks mandate teacher engagement with Indigenous histories\, cultures\, and perspectives; however\, their capacity to foster transformative practice remains under-examined. Her research shows that greater attention to critical consciousness\, resistance\, and structural conditions is required to enable genuinely transformative Indigenous education in practice.
