SUMMARY:Public Lecture featuring Dr. Nathan Murray
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nathan Murray holds a PhD in English from the University of Toronto. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of English and History at Algoma University. Dr. Murray’s research examines the intersection of writing pedagogy and digital technology with a particular focus on the impact of generative AI on academic integrity and assessment. This lecture explores the history of the essay as a form of assessment in universities\, in the context of how generative AI now threatens the form’s very existence. Shortly after the public launch of ChatGPT\, a number of prominent commentators proclaimed that the essay was dead. Unwittingly\, these commentators were joining a long tradition; educators throughout the twenty and twenty-first century wrote epitaphs announcing the genre’s imminent death\, although these proclamations have always been premature. Scholarship is littered with evangelists advocating for a replacement to the essay. And yet the format has persisted Dr. Murray intends to ask what value has essay writing produced for students\, their instructors and for graduates writing out in the wider world? Is the institution of the college essay worth defending? When GenAI promises to write our essays for us\, what comes next? \n\n\n\n\nGET TICKETS HERE

SUMMARY:Faculty Colloquium Series with Dr Teresa Maynes\, Assistant Professor\, Psychology
DESCRIPTION:Work is important for long-term substance use recovery\, yet career developmentis largely absent from addiction research and treatment. This talk will present findings from a randomized controlledtrial comparing an 8-week HAT-based counselling group with a standardemployment skills group for adults with a history of substance use. Results showthat hope-based career counselling improved psychological resources associatedwith future-oriented outlooks. The presentation will highlight interventions usedin hope-focused career counselling and demonstrate how career theory can betranslated into evidence-based practice. \n\n\n\nDr. Maynes completed her PhD in counselling psychology at the University ofBritish Columbia in 2025 and recently joined StMU as an assistant professor ofPsychology.

SUMMARY:Darwin Day with Dr. Matthew Morris
DESCRIPTION:Darwin famously wrote “If it could be demonstrated that any complex organexisted\, which could not possibly have been formed by numerous\, successive\,slight modifications\, my theory would absolutely break down.” This riskyprediction generated two different sorts of debate: the first among biologists ofthe late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who debated whether Darwin’sclaim was correct – must evolution be gradual? – and the other from present-daycreationists who argue that certain complex traits refute Darwin’s claim. Yet apartial solution to both was already hinted at by Darwin: organismal bodies areflexible. Phenotypes can change under different environmental stimuli\, and thiscan happen rapidly\, dramatically\, and in a coordinated fashion. Dr. Morris willintroduce the concept of phenotypic plasticity\, the capacity of a single genotypeto produce multiple environmentally determined phenotypes\, and suggest thatsome modern critiques of Darwin can be put to rest through an understandingof what Darwin called that “most perplexing subject.”

SUMMARY:Faculty Colloquium Series w/ Dr. Cory Wright-Maley
DESCRIPTION:In this talk Dr. Wright-Maley will discuss how Canadian identity is ever difficult to pin down and even more difficult to teach. One thing most Canadians know forcertain is that we’re not American. Such an assertion has implications for what and how we teach about our country as we seek to differentiate ourselves fromour southern neighbour. This talk pulls together the multidirectional strands that threaten and strengthen Canadian “common knowledge” about themselves inrelation to the United States: the erasure and reclamation of inconvenient national histories\, U.S. sovereignty threats\, and the contested embrace andrejection of toxic populism. Each reveals a dimension of Canadian identity and presents both opportunities and ongoing challenges for teachers trying toarticulate what it means to be Canadian.
