It is with heavy hearts that St. Mary’s University mourns the loss of one of our longest supporters and dearest friends – Gerald Watkins, who passed away Monday, January 25th, 2021 at the age of 92.
Having served as the accountant for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary for 19 years and as a dedicated member of the downtown Rotary Club of Calgary, Gerry’s philanthropic endeavours have left a lasting legacy on the City of Calgary.
Of course it is as a foundational member of the original St. Mary’s University planning committee, that we best remember him. Gerry was dedicated to Catholic education and believed deeply in the importance of establishing a Catholic university in Calgary. He worked tirelessly to help create and then ensure the university’s success. One of his most important contributions was serving as the university’s Treasurer to the Board of Governors for seven years. Together with his beloved wife Faye, Gerry remained deeply involved in the university’s many initiatives, and even established a generous support program for our students — the Gerry Watkins Bursary Fund — that has allowed many St. Mary’s students to pursue their educational dreams and to become caring, compassionate leaders in the community.
St. Mary’s University offers its deepest condolences to Gerry’s family. We have lost a true champion, but we will remember him always. St. Mary’s University will be lowering its flag to half-mast in his honour.
