elizabeth.cressman@stmu.ca Students in Calgary will have the rare opportunity to be introduced to the ancient tradition of fresco painting. The true fresco technique, also known as “buon fresco” or “affresco” dates back to 1500 B.C. The technique was used by medieval and renaissance artists to decorate the walls of the great churches, monasteries, and public spaces of their time. Philip Davydov has developed a unique three day workshop designed to introduce students to this ancient technique. Fresco painting involves the application of pigments to a surface of freshly prepared lime-based plaster. Students will learn to make a cartoon (drawing) of the image to be painted, prepare the plaster, mix the pigments, and then paint the fresh plaster. Students in this workshop will have a variety of models to choose from or may be able to develop their own image in consultation with the instructor.
Instructor Philip Davydov is one of Russia’s leading iconographers and mural artists. Together with his wife, Olga Shalamova, he founded the Sacred Mural Studio in St. Petersburg, Russia. Philip also teaches at the St. Petersburg Institute of Theology and Sacred Arts. In addition to writing and lecturing widely in Russia on the theme of the renewal of sacred art, Philip regularly teaches workshops in the United States, Australia, and Canada In order to maintain the close one-on-one nature of instruction, enrolment will be very limited. Tuition is due at the time of registration. Students may cancel their registration and receive a refund (minus a $50 administration fee) up to 7 days prior to the beginning of the course. After this date, no refunds are given for cancellation.
