The St. Mary’s University cross country team struck again as we hosted the ACAC Grand Prix #4 on our home course on October 15. It was a beautiful day to be outdoors, with participants taking in our view of Fish Creek Provincial Park as they raced to the finish.
Our women’s team placed first for their second consecutive meet in a very close battle with Medicine Hat College. The results were neck and neck, with our women’s team scoring 34 points while MHC followed closely behind by a single point with 35.
The Lighting were led by Maria Fox (4th), Cadence Laplante (5th), Sydney Zissos (6th) and Elizabeth Krueger (19th). Maria Leonard (20th) and Philine Schmidt (21st) came across the line just behind Elizabeth.
With this result, we’re thrilled to share that the StMU Lightning Women’s Cross Country team will hold their 3rd place national ranking that they achieved following the Oct 1st race.
Our men’s team also had enough runners to post a team score for the first time this season. They placed 6th and were led by Dan Quibell (23rd), with Riley Follensbee (30th), Paul Bjartveit (38th), Jack Herron (40th) and Rowan Seerup (41st) rounding out the team.
Head Coach Donna Dixon was happy with the results on Saturday, stating “Everyone had a seasonal best race today. The team is training consistently with the goal of strong performances at Provincials on October 29th in Edmonton and Nationals on November 12th in Medicine Hat where the women’s team will contend for the podium.”
Thanks to Athletic Director Nathan Ruff and all the volunteers who organized such a great event on our historic campus on Saturday. Go Lightning!
