The Reason He Works

A first-year athlete brings a family-sized purpose to every opportunity.

Sean Huynh was the smallest among older cousins who played basketball. That made keeping up difficult. It also made him competitive.

His cousins Jack and Willis pushed him and gave him players close to home to look up to. Basketball became something he could work at, a place where effort offered a response to being the younger, smaller one.

Now entering his first year of eligibility with the Lightning, Sean identifies making this year’s active rotation as a milestone. The opportunity matters because he knows what it feels like to turn one down.

An active roster spot in Kelowna once represented the thing he had worked toward. Declining it was difficult. He describes that decision through his faith: learning to trust God’s timing rather than insist on his own.

Turning down something you wanted can make the work before it feel complicated. Sean does not describe the decision as easy. The opportunity was real, and so was the difficulty of letting it pass. Trusting his faith gave him a way to understand that his own timetable could not determine everything.

Making the rotation this year gives him a new point from which to look forward. He can appreciate being here without needing the earlier decision to become a simple story. Both experiences have helped shape how he values the chance to play.

His motivation is personal and direct. He wants to retire his mom one day.

Watching her work through difficult days has given him a lasting example of perseverance. When his own commitment falters, he thinks about how far her effort has brought the family.

“Every time I think about giving up I’m reminded by her work ethic,” he says.

St. Mary’s also connects to earlier basketball memories. As a younger player, Sean looked up to athletes such as John Paul and Angelo. Becoming part of the program gives him a chance to occupy a place he once watched from the outside.

There is a satisfying turn in that memory. The players he watched helped make university basketball feel like something worth imagining. Now Sean can participate in the program himself, with teammates who will share the work and younger people who may be doing their own imagining. He knows how an example can stay with a kid. His older cousins gave him one, too.

That change carries responsibility as well as satisfaction. There will be other young athletes watching the players on this team, wondering whether they might someday join them.
