Scholarships & Student Awards

St. Mary’s University offers an extensive range of scholarships and bursaries to students. Scholarships and bursaries play a vital role in financially assisting students as they pursue their post-secondary education. In the 2023-2024 academic year, St. Mary’s University disbursed $560,030 in student awards. A total of 413 awards were given to 239 students. This represents almost 30% of StMU full-time students.

Definitions and Requirements 

Scholarship: a scholarship is awarded primarily on the basis of academic achievement, although other criteria such as contribution to community or campus life, faith involvement, extracurricular activities or financial need may be considered in the selection process.

Bursary: a bursary is awarded primarily on the basis of financial need, although other criteria such as academic standing, contribution to community or campus life, faith involvement or extracurricular activities may be considered in the selection process. Students must present a minimum GPA of 2.0.

Award: an award is given on the basis of academic achievement or other conditions stated in the descriptions. It is generally focused on a specific subject area or extracurricular activity. Awards may be in the form of funding or books.

Applying for Awards

Most awards require the submission of an application. For awards made by non-University agencies, application forms and deadlines may differ. Inquiries should be directed to those agencies. Awards distributed by St. Mary’s University are listed in this section.

Online Award Applications are available on the St. Mary’s University website. Applications must be received by the University by the specified application deadline dates. All supporting documents for the application, such as letters of reference and résumés, are also due by the application deadlines. Supporting documents can be uploaded directly through the online application. The decisions of the Awards Committee are final.

2026-2027 Awards Application for Students Entering from High School – Fill out form

The Fall 2026 Awards Application is now available and will close on July 31, 2026. All applications and supporting documentation must be received by July 31, 2026.

Payment of Awards

Unless otherwise noted, students in receipt of awards administered by the University must maintain registration in at least nine credit hours per term at St. Mary’s University and must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0. Awards will first be applied to any tuition and fees owed to the University, which may be applied across Fall and Winter terms, and the balance may be issued by electronic funds transfer. The University assumes liability for the payment of awards only to the extent that gifts from donors or returns from particular investments for these purposes will permit. If a student is granted an award, St. Mary’s University reserves the right to release pertinent information to provincial funding bodies.

President’s Entrance Scholarships

These scholarships are automatically awarded to new students entering directly from high school who achieve an average of 75 per cent or higher calculated on the five best Grade 11 or Grade 12 admission subjects. Students must have completed high school within one year in order to be eligible (ie. most recent graduation or up to one year prior to the following Fall term). The amount will vary based on average and will automatically be applied to tuition and fees: half the value in the Fall term and half the value in the Winter term.

  • $3000 if registered in at least 9 credits per term (Fall and Winter)

  • $1000 if registered in at least 9 credits per term (Fall and Winter)

For President’s Entrance Scholarships, St. Mary’s University identifies eligible students through the admission process. No separate application is required. Recipients who continue at St. Mary’s University in subsequent years may qualify to receive other awards based on their academic performance.

President’s Continuing Scholarships (for 2026-2027 only)

These $500 scholarships are automatically awarded to students entering second year at St. Mary’s University in 2026 – 2027 who:

For President’s Continuing Scholarships, St. Mary’s University identifies eligible students following their first year. No separate application is required. Recipients who continue at St. Mary’s University in subsequent years may qualify to receive other awards based on their academic performance.

Post-Secondary Transfer Scholarships

University students who transfer to St. Mary’s University with a minimum of 30 transferred university-level credits may be eligible for the Post-Secondary Transfer Scholarship, a one-time award from $800 up to a maximum of $1,000. To become eligible for the Post-Secondary Transfer Scholarship, applicants must:

High School & Continuing Awards

Value: $2,500

This scholarship is awarded to a new full-time student entering St. Mary’s University directly from high school or entering within one year of graduation. Other criteria are: 1) graduate from a rural area of Alberta 2) excellent (scholarship average of at least 90%) academic achievement 3) volunteer/leadership activities within the community and 4) course interests and future goals.

Value: $1,400

Norman and Agnes Dawson, long-time Calgarians who were married 51 years, were excellent role models for family and friends demonstrating honesty; integrity; fairness; compassion; community awareness; volunteerism and religious faith. The criteria for this memorial bursary are: 1) continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University 2) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average 3) a strong work ethic 4) demonstrated financial need 5) dedication to the pursuit of post-secondary education and 6) demonstrated good moral character, community involvement and dedication to service. Applicants must provide a personal statement (500 words maximum) indicating how they meet the criteria.

This bursary, established by Albert and Laura Tysowski, is awarded to a continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University completing the Bachelor of Arts, Social Justice and Catholic Studies degree program – Catholic Studies Stream, or completing a minor or concentration in Catholic Studies. The other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average 2) good moral character, community involvement and dedication to service and 3) demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a single parent. Applicants must provide a personal statement (500 words maximum) indicating how they meet the criteria.

Value: $1,250

This scholarship is given to a new full-time student entering St. Mary’s University directly from a high school in Alberta or entering within one year after graduation with good (scholarship average of at least 75%) academic achievement. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need.

Value: $2,500 (2)

Alice Austin was committed to lifelong learning and the mission of St. Mary’s University. These memorial bursaries reflect that commitment and are awarded to continuing full-time students at St. Mary’s University. Other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average 2) demonstrated financial need.

Value: $2,300

This scholarship is awarded to a continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University with a good (at least 2.7) grade point average who has been granted academic accommodations with a documented disability. Full-time status is generally understood as registration in at least nine credits per term although there may be occasions when academic accommodations require a reduced course load. Preference will be given to a student who has demonstrated leadership and/or service to the community.

Value: $1,500

This scholarship is provided by the Knights of Columbus Council 9658 of the Monsignor John S. Smith Council and is awarded to a new full-time student entering St. Mary’s University directly from a Catholic high school or entering within one year after graduation. Other criteria are: 1) very good (scholarship average of at least 80%) academic achievement and 2) demonstrated good moral character, community involvement and dedication to service (e.g. liturgy, music, ministry, catechetics, other). Applicants must provide a personal statement (500 words maximum) indicating how they meet the criteria.

Value: $1,050

This bursary is provided by the Assembly of Women Religious, Calgary Diocese, and is awarded to a continuing full-time female student at St. Mary’s University. Other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average 2) demonstrated financial need and 3) demonstrated good moral character, community involvement and dedication to service. Applicants must submit a personal statement (500 words maximum) indicating how they meet the criteria.

Value: $1,000 (2)

These awards are presented to the male and female athlete of the year by the Calgary Booster Club at the annual St. Mary’s University Lightning athletic banquet and are based on play/athletic accomplishments. Selection is made by the Director of Athletics, the Athletics and Recreation Specialist and the Chair of the Awards Committee (or designate). No application is required.

Value: $1,000

The Calgary Italian Sportsmen’s Dinner Association provides this award in recognition of their continuing and long-standing tradition of supporting education in Calgary. The criteria are: 1) continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University 2) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average 3) participation in athletics and 4) demonstrated financial need.

Value: $1,300 (4)

These scholarships are awarded to continuing full-time students at St. Mary’s University with a good (at least 2.7) grade point average who were former Juventus players and/or current members of St. Mary’s University Lightning Athletics.

These bursaries are automatically awarded in the Winter term to continuing full-time students at St. Mary’s University who submitted a Winter Awards application. Other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average in the previous Fall term and 2) demonstrated financial need.

Value: $650

The rural parish of St. Mary’s in Cluny awards this scholarship to assist a new full-time student entering St. Mary’s University directly from high school or entering within one year after graduation. Other criteria are: 1) from a rural area and 2) good (scholarship average of at least 75%) academic achievement.

Value: $1,000 (5)

In recognition of the contributions of Dr. Allan P. Markin, these scholarships are automatically awarded by St. Mary’s University to the top five students as follows: 1) highest (at least 2.7) grade point average 2) earned at the least 30 credits in the previous Fall/Winter terms 3) registered in at least 30 credit in the upcoming Fall/Winter terms. No application is required.

This bursary is awarded to a continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University. Other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average 2) successfully completed a French language course (FREN) at St. Mary’s University and 3) demonstrated financial need.

This scholarship is awarded to a continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University. Other criteria are: 1) excellent (at least 3.7) grade point average and 2) successfully completed a French language course (FREN) at St. Mary’s University.

Value: $6,000

Dr. David Lawless, who spent the last three years of his career in higher education helping to establish St. Mary’s University and serving as President from 1996-1999, established this scholarship to honour his life work in Catholic education. The criteria are: 1) entering second year of a baccalaureate degree 2) excellent (at least 3.7) grade point average and 3) demonstrated commitment to St. Mary’s University and its educational philosophy through active participation in campus life. Applicants must submit a letter of reference attesting to their involvement/participation in campus life at St. Mary’s University.

Value: $900

This scholarship, established in 2023, honours Dr. Gerry Turcotte’s service to St. Mary’s University as its President. The criteria are: 1) new full-time student entering St. Mary’s University directly from high school or entering within one year after graduation 2) good (scholarship average of at least 75%) academic achievement and 3) overcome personal challenges. Preference will be given to: 1) demonstrated financial need and/or 2) a single parent.

Value: $750

This award honours Dr. Michael Duggan’s extensive work in social justice activities. It provides support to a continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University who shows leadership in working for social justice locally, nationally or internationally.

This award automatically given at the end of the Fall term to the student with the highest grade in mathematics (MATH) or statistics (STAT). Preference will be given to students in the Bachelor of Science degree program who completed MATH 249. No application is required.

This bursary was established in memory of Dr. Vic Grossi, a dedicated professor at St. Mary’s University who demonstrated a true talent and passion for teaching and was a prominent psychologist in Calgary for more than 25 years. The criteria are: 1) continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University 2) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average 3) entering 3rd or 4th year in a Bachelor of Arts, 4-year Psychology or Honours Psychology degree program 4) intending to pursue a future career in Psychology and 5) demonstrated financial need.

Value: $1,000

This bursary was established by Edward and Geraldine’s daughter Kathryn in recognition of her parent’s long-term commitment to St. Mary’s University. The criteria are: 1) continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University 2) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average 3) demonstrated financial need and 4) commitment to working toward social, economic and political justice locally, nationally and internationally.

These scholarships are automatically awarded to continuing full-time students at St. Mary’s University with a good (at least 2.7) grade point average. No application is required.

These scholarships are automatically awarded to continuing full-time students in their third or fourth year at St. Mary’s University with an excellent (at least 3.7) grade point average. No application is required.

Value: $5,000

This scholarship is awarded to a new full-time student entering St. Mary’s University directly from a Catholic high school or entering within one year after graduation. Other criteria are: 1) excellent (scholarship average of at least 90%) academic achievement 2) community involvement (e.g. volunteering with a parish, diocese, health centre, the elderly, children, the disadvantaged, other service groups) and 3) leadership (e.g. participation in student governance, athletics, community programs, other activities). Applicants must submit one letter of reference attesting to your community involvement and/or leadership abilities by the application deadline. Applications without a reference letter will not be considered.

Value: $1,700

George Alloro was best known to the people of Calgary as the man who lit up Confederation Park with an annual display of Christmas lights and who worked tirelessly as a community volunteer to help others less fortunate. The criteria of this memorial bursary are: 1) continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University 2) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average 3) good moral character 4) involvement in volunteer and community work and 5) demonstrated financial need.

In recognition of the contribution of Gerry Watkins, a faithful volunteer in the early years of St. Mary’s University, these bursaries are awarded to continuing full-time students at St. Mary’s University. Other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average and 2) demonstrated serious financial need.

This award is automatically given to the continuing full-time student in their third or fourth year of a baccalaureate degree who achieved the greatest grade point average increase from their 1st year at St. Mary’s University. No application is required.

Value: $3,000

In memory of Gordon Elliott, this scholarship is automatically awarded to continuing full-time Status Indian/First Nations, Non-Status Indian/First Nations, Métis, or Inuit student at St. Mary’s University with the highest grade point average (at least 2.7) in the previous Fall/Winter terms. Upon selection, proof of ancestry will be required by providing one of the following documents: 1) certificate of Indian Status, a status card or a valid band membership card 2) letter from your band verifying your status 3) membership card issued by a Métis organization (legal entity) you are registered with 4) a certified copy of a Nunavut Trust Certificate card or Inuit beneficiary card 5) a letter of support from Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada or Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated or 6) a letter of support from a First Nation, Métis or Inuit organization (must be a legal entity) confirming your indigenous ancestry. No application is required.

These bursaries are awarded to continuing full-time students in a baccalaureate degree at St. Mary’s University. Other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average and 2) demonstrated financial need.

This scholarship is automatically awarded to a continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University with a very good (at least 3.3) grade point average. No application is required.

Value: $2,000 (2)

These scholarships were established in memory of Helena Rojek and are awarded to continuing full-time students in the Bachelor of Science degree program at St. Mary’s University. The criteria are: 1) good (at least 2.7) grade point average 2) successful completion of CHEM 351 and CHEM 353 at St. Mary’s University and 3) demonstrated leadership abilities and/or community involvement.

Value: $1,000

This scholarship is awarded to a continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University. The criteria are: 1) good (at least 2.7) grade point average and 2) has overcome personal challenges. Preference will be given to a student from rural Alberta.

Value: $650

This scholarship was established by Mrs. Evelyn Hergott in recognition of her husband’s involvement and interest in Catholic education and is awarded to a continuing full-time student in the Bachelor of Arts, Social Justice and Catholic Studies degree program – Catholic Studies stream, or with a minor or concentration in Catholic Studies at St. Mary’s University. The criteria are: 1) excellent (at least 3.7) grade point average and 2) demonstrated good moral character, community involvement and dedication to service. Applicants must submit a personal statement (500 words maximum) indicating how they meet the criteria.

Value: $7,000

Linda Nielsen was a passionate advocate of education in the liberal arts and sciences and was a firm believer in social justice and community involvement. With her academic background in International Relations and Economics she conducted research for The Peace Corps, The World Bank, The United Nations and other international development organizations before teaching economics at St. Mary’s University. The criteria for this scholarship are: 1) continuing full-time student in a baccalaureate degree at St. Mary’s University 2) good (at least 2.7) grade point average 3) strong work ethic/good moral character 4) volunteer involvement related to community/nationally/internationally social justice activities 5) active participation on the St. Mary’s University Social Justice Committee 6) involvement in other campus life activities and 7) volunteer with children or the elderly. Preference will be given to a student with financial need. Applicants must submit one letter of reference attesting how you meet the criteria by the application deadline. Applications without a reference letter will not be considered.

The Knights of Columbus Council 4878 established this bursary to honour the life and work of Lorne Dowling, a former teacher at St. Mary’s High School in Calgary and the founding Grand Knight for Council 4878. The criteria are: 1) a new full-time student entering St. Mary’s University directly from a Catholic high school or entering within one year after graduation 2) satisfactory (scholarship average of at least 65%) academic achievement 3) entering a baccalaureate degree program 4) demonstrated good moral character, community involvement and dedication to service 5) demonstrated financial need and 6) course interests and future goals. Preference will be given to a student whose parent or grandparent is a member of the Knights of Columbus. Applicants must provide a personal statement (500 words maximum) indicating how they meet the criteria.

This bursary is awarded to a continuing student (full- or part-time) at St. Mary’s University. Other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average and 2) demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to a single parent or a student from Saskatchewan. Applicants must submit one letter of reference attesting how you meet the criteria by the application deadline. Applications without a reference letter will not be considered.

Value: $1,250

This bursary is awarded to a continuing student full-time student in the Bachelor of Science degree program at St. Mary’s University. Other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average 2) demonstrated financial need and 3) successful completion of at least three introductory core science courses (BIOL, CHEM) at St. Mary’s University. Preference will be given to a single parent.

Value: $600 (9)

These bursaries are awarded to continuing full-time students at St. Mary’s University. Other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average and 2) demonstrated financial need. In years when HIST 381/RLGS 305: Rome and Christian Spirituality is being offered in the Spring term, those students travelling to Rome will be eligible to apply. In other years, students completing Bachelor of Arts in Social Justice and Catholic Studies degree – Catholic Studies Stream or completing a minor or concentration in Catholic Studies will be eligible to apply in the Winter term.

Value: $3,000

Margaret and Al Soloski lived each day to the fullest and touched the hearts of so many. This bursary was established to honour their faith and dedication. The criteria are: 1) continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University 2) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average 3) demonstrated financial need and 4) successfully completed a senior level Religious Studies course (RLGS) or Theology course (THEO) at St. Mary’s University. Preference will be given to a student active in St. Mary’s University Campus Ministry.

Value: $1,000

In memory of Maria-Pilar Lawless, this bursary is awarded to a continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University. Other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average 2) demonstrated financial need and 3) successfully completed both SPAN 201 and SPAN 203 at St. Mary’s University. Preference is given to a student in the Bachelor of Arts, 4-year History degree program and/or a student who has successfully completed two European History courses (HIST) at St. Mary’s University.

This scholarship is awarded to a new full-time student entering St. Mary’s University directly from a Catholic high school or entering within one year after graduation. Other criteria are: 1) excellent (scholarship average of at least 90%) academic achievement and 2) demonstrated good moral character, community involvement and dedication to service. Applicants must provide a personal statement below (500 words maximum) indicating how they meet the criteria.

These bursaries are awarded in both the Fall and Winter terms to continuing full-time students at St. Mary’s University. Other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average and 2) demonstrated financial need. A separate application is required for each term.

This bursary is awarded to a continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University. Other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average 2) demonstrated financial need.

Value: $800

This bursary is awarded to a new full-time student entering St. Mary’s University directly from high school or entering within one year after graduation. Other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (scholarship average of at least 65%) academic achievement and 2) demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to applicants from the Caribbean or Central America.

Value: $2,000

This scholarship is awarded to a new full-time student entering St. Mary’s University directly from high school or entering within one year after graduation. Other criteria are: 1) very good (scholarship average of at least 80%) academic achievement and 2) demonstrated service to the community and/or leadership. Preference will be given to a student involved in social justice initiatives within the community.

Value: $1,250 (6)

These scholarships are awarded to students entering their first year of study at St. Mary’s University. Applicants must demonstrate good academic achievement and be registered as full-time students.

Value: $500 (number varies)

These bursaries are awarded to continuing full-time students at St. Mary’s University in the Winter term. The criteria are: 1) satisfactory (at least 2.0) grade point average 2) demonstrated financial need and 3) completing the Bachelor of Arts, Social Justice and Catholic Studies degree program – Catholic Studies Stream, or completing a minor or concentration in Catholic Studies.

Value: up to $20,000 over 4 years

These renewable scholarships, tenable over four years of study (total of $20,000) are offered to new full-time students entering St. Mary’s University directly from high school or entering within one year after graduation. Other criteria are: 1) entering a baccalaureate degree program 2) very good (scholarship average of at least 80%) academic achievement and 3) demonstrated leadership abilities and a commitment to community involvement. Applicants must submit one letter of reference attesting to your leadership abilities and/or community involvement by the application deadline. Applications without a reference letter will not be considered.

For renewal of the scholarship in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year of degree (if applicable), recipients must 1) achieve a very good (at least 3.3) grade point average and 2) demonstrate continued involvement in St. Mary’s University campus life. A separate application demonstrating continued involvement in campus life will be required each year and only eligible students will be invited to apply.

Value: $31,000-$36,000 over 5-6 years 

These renewable scholarships, tenable over five years of study (total of $31,000 BA/BEd) or over six years of study (total of $36,000 BA/BEd), are awarded to new full-time students entering a baccalaureate degree program at St. Mary’s University directly from a Catholic high school or entering within one year after graduation and are intending to complete a Bachelor of Education degree at St. Mary’s University immediately following completion of either their 3-year of 4-year baccalaureate degree. Other criteria: 1) intention to become a teacher in a Catholic school 2) very good (scholarship average of at least 80%) academic achievement in high school 3) demonstrated involvement in volunteer and extra-curricular activities while attending high school 4) first preference will be given to students from Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, Saskatchewan 5) second preference will be given to students who attended a Catholic high school in Saskatchewan and 6) third preference will be given to students who attended a Catholic high school in Alberta or other jurisdictions. Applicants must submit one letter of reference attesting to your involvement in volunteer activities and extra-curricular activities with children or youth while attending high school by the application deadline. Applications without a reference letter will not be considered.

Value: $2,000 (2)

The Sisters of Providence, owners of the Father Lacombe and Providence Care Centres, have a particular dedication to ministry among the less fortunate in our society. The criteria are: 1) continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University 2) very good (at least 3.3) grade point average and 3) demonstrated active participation in a volunteer activity over the past year with either children or the elderly.

Value: $1,500

The donor of this scholarship hopes that one day the recipient will endow another scholarship to continue the tradition of supporting students in their pursuit of higher education and thus established this scholarship to support a continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University. Other criteria are: 1) intending to pursue a science or mathematics major 2) excellent (at least 3.7) grade point average and 3) interest in teaching. Preference will be given to a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Calgary.

Value: $2,500

This bursary is awarded to a to a new full-time student entering St. Mary’s University directly from high school or entering within one year after graduation. Other criteria are: 1) satisfactory (scholarship average of at least 65%) academic achievement and 2) demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to single mothers and students with disabilities.

Value: $1,050

This bursary is given to a continuing full-time student at St. Mary’s University (full-time is generally understood as registration in at least nine credits per term although there may be occasions when academic accommodations or adaptations require a reduced course load). Other criteria are: 1) documented academic accommodations or adaptions in the areas of mobility or neurodiversity 2) completing a baccalaureate degree 3) good (at least 2.7) grade point average 4) demonstrated financial need 5) resilience in achieving your educational goals while contributing to build community and 7) outlining how financial support would help to continue that service to yourself and others.

Value: $3,500 (2)

Robert Spence operated a well-known retail shoe business in Calgary, and after his death his wife Annette set up an endowment foundation from the proceeds of the estate to assist new students entering St. Mary’s University directly from high school or entering within one year after graduation. Value: Gold Medal and $2,000

The ATA (Alberta Teachers’ Association) Gold Medal in Education is awarded at the Spring convocation ceremony to one student graduating from St. Mary’s University Bachelor of Education degree program. Selection is made by the Faculty of Education and is based on a combination of excellence during coursework and field experiences, support for other students, criterion inspired by the Teaching Quality Standards (TQS), and the intent to teach within Alberta immediately following graduation. The ATA may interview the recipient for recognition in the ATA news.

Value: $1,500 (3); Crystal Award for Winner Awarded annually at the Spring convocation ceremony to the student graduating from the St. Mary’s University Bachelor of Education degree program who is most passionate and competent in the subject of Social Studies, in particular Canadian and Albertan History. Three students will be nominated by St. Mary’s University for the monetary award, and interviewed by a judging panel. Final selection of one student for the Crystal Award is made by the panel.

The purpose of this award is to recognize students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, especially in the area of disability, and/or initiative to improve the conditions and lives of others. Applicants are selected on the basis of the role and contribution each applicant has made at their school. Academic achievement, financial need and other activities may also be taken into consideration. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, Alberta residents, and enrolled full-time. This scholarship is funded by the Alberta Government.

The purpose of this award is to recognize post-secondary students who have demonstrated outstanding dedication and leadership to fellow students and to their community. The award is provided by the Alberta Government and was initiated by the Alberta College and Technical Institute Student Executive Council (ACTISEC) in honour of Laurence Decore, former Edmonton mayor and leader of the Alberta Liberal party. Applicants are selected on the basis of involvement in student government or student societies, clubs or organizations, student organizations at the provincial or national level or non-profit community organizations. In honour of Louise McKinney, these awards were established to recognize exceptional academic achievement and encourage outstanding students to continue their studies at the postsecondary level. This scholarship was established in memory of Jason Lang, a 17-year-old high school student who was killed in a school shooting. The purpose of this award is to reward the outstanding academic achievements of Alberta post-secondary students. To be eligible, a student must:

  • have completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous academic year (September to April)
  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and a resident of Alberta (visa students are not eligible)
  • be entering the second, third or fourth year of post-secondary studies
  • be enrolled full time at St. Mary’s University in at least one term during the current Fall/Winter terms

This scholarship was created by an endowment to the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund to build capacity in the area of language education. Applicants are selected on the basis of being enrolled in an Alberta teacher preparation program that will allow them to become a language teacher after they graduate.
