Pathways - Flexible Entry Pathway

Pathways - Flexible Entry Pathway

The StMU Flexible Entry Pathway (FEP) offers an opportunity for students who do not meet the regular academic requirements for admission to St. Mary’s University to qualify for entrance into the Faculty of Arts & Science. This pathway is designed for both domestic and international students who attended domestic high schools but do not have English 30-1. Get started at St. Mary’s University on probation in the Fall semester by taking a bundle of three courses that were chosen to build university-level reading, writing, research, community and critical thinking skills. After successful completion, get admission to a Arts & Science degree at StMU with credits from those courses!

Pathways

Should you successfully complete the FEP you will gain admission to the Faculty of Arts & Sciences at St. Mary’s University with 9 credits toward your degree. Successful completion is a minimum grade of C- in each course and an overall term GPA of 2.0.

Students will then submit a Change of Program form by the end of the Fall term.

Certain programs may have additional requirements that must still be met for admission.

Course Offerings

Students in the Flexible Entry Pathway will take the following three courses in their first semester:

English 201: Introduction to Literature and Composition. This course provides students with the ability to read and write about literature at a post-secondary level. Students will analyze a diverse range of literary texts and through this process become stronger critical thinkers and persuasive writers. The course also emphasizes the necessary skills for students to become independent learners familiar with university resources, including our library’s databases and holdings and with the Student Success Centre’s peer-tutors and success seminars.

LBST 201: Introduction to Liberal Studies. This course introduces students to the notion of the university, interdisciplinarity, and scholarly achievement. Through a variety of readings and assignments, the course fosters a sense of belonging in the learning community, promotes engagement in the academic and co-curricular life of the University, and helps students make a successful transition to university.

INST 201: Introduction to Indigenous Studies. This course is an introduction to the study of Indigenous Peoples in what is now called Canada, addressing historically constructed and contemporary views of Indigenous peoples and their rights as guaranteed under the Canadian constitution. Through course lectures, seminar discussions, and experiential learning, this course explores the history of Treaty 7, the nations within the Province of Alberta, and the diversity of Nations within Canada.
