On September 10, the St. Mary’s University community gathered to celebrate the installation of Dr. Scott Morrison as President and Vice Chancellor.

Held at Calgary’s historic St. Mary’s Cathedral, it is tradition at St. Mary’s University to hold the installation ceremony within Holy Mass, honouring our foundation of our Catholic faith and to seek God’s blessing over Dr. Morrison’s leadership.

The installation ceremony marks the official start of Dr. Morrison’s tenure as President and Vice-Chancellor following a period as Interim President prior to the announcement of his appointment earlier this year. Administered by Bishop McGratton who also serves as Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Morrison accepted the oath of leadership, agreeing to uphold the values of our university and commit to serving the University in the best interest of its students, faculty and staff.

Remarks were given on behalf of the Board of Directors by Board Chair, Gary Strother, who spoke to Dr. Morrison’s quick impact in his time so far at St. Mary’s, “Since assuming the interim position, you have embraced this community with genuine enthusiasm… You have brought people together around a shared vision for what St. Mary’s can become, and have already achieved demonstrable success, while simultaneously promoting its Catholic foundation and values that have brought us to this point.”

Dr. Morrison’s son, Zach Morrison reflected on his impact during the 10 years he spent as Superintendent for Christ the Redeemer School District, which saw exceptional performance under his leadership.

St. Mary’s University’s Indigenous Relations & Initiatives office, led by Angela Bear Chief, along with Elder Dr. Duane False Cheif presented Dr. Morrison with a traditional Metis Ribbon Shirt and medallion beaded with our university’s star.

The installation was celebrated by the academic community, with fellow post-secondary presidents, previous St. Mary’s University presidents, and faculty assembled in their traditional academic robes, ushering the new president toward officially assuming this leadership role.

For Dr. Morrison, he looks forward to continuing the momentum he’s achieved as he leads St. Mary’s through a time of growth and expansion. He thanked his colleagues, peers, family, and friends for their support and underscored his commitment to continuing to serve the University in faith, truth, and strength.
