Rock Gonsalves

Sessional Lecturer

I am a former K–12 educator whose teaching experience spans elementary, junior high, high school, and adult settings. I received a B. A (Political Science, McGill University), B.Ed. (University of Calgary) and an M.Ed. (University of Calgary). In addition to my sessional work, I serve as a practicum advisor, supporting emerging teachers as they develop their professional identities and instructional practices. When time allows, I also work as a substitute/guest teacher, staying connected to diverse school communities and learning environments.

Specialization/Research Interest

My academic and professional interests include cocreating curriculum, decolonizing education, and exploring ungrading initiatives that promote deeper, more equitable learning. I endeavour to help students discover information, apply it reflectively, and embrace the power of lifelong learning. My work is guided by a commitment to designing learning environments that honour student voice, thoughtfully examine traditional power structures, and cultivate curiosity, critical and creative thinking, and authentic engagement.

Beyond my professional life, I am a parent of two wonderful children—one a passionate artistic swimmer and the other a dedicated hockey player. I can often be found cheering them on from rink and poolside. I am also fortunate to share life with my incredible wife, whose support, humour, and steadiness ground our family. I enjoy staying active—playing ice hockey, running, and cycling—as well as playing the drums, albeit “very inadequately”.
