Patience Mbwizhu, A Visionary Leader Building Community and Opportunity at St. Mary’s University

As St. Mary’s University prepares for its President’s Gala on March 6th, in celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8th, the spotlight shines on women in leadership—those who are paving the way for future generations. In this spotlight, we are proud to feature Patience Mbwizhu, whose work in development at St. Mary’s University is driven by a profound sense of community, purpose, and empowerment.

Patience Mbwizhu

Rooted in Community

Patience is at the helm of one of the university’s most significant events, serving as the lead for our annual President’s Gala. The pressure of delivering such a high-profile project is no small feat, but Patience remains grounded by focusing on the mission behind the event. “Every detail of this event is an opportunity to connect donors with a life-changing chance to impact students’ futures,” she shares. “Knowing that my work contributes to a greater purpose—one that empowers students—keeps me focused and driven.”

While the world of post-secondary development and fundraising is often viewed as simply reaching targets, running campaign after campaign, and juggling numerous relationships, Patience Mbwizhu approaches her role as Senior Development Officer at St. Mary’s with a unique perspective. Her passion and excellence are fueled by an upbringing that deeply valued collective effort.

Growing up in a close-knit community in Zimbabwe, Patience learned early on the power of connection. “I knew all my neighbors, those who were close by and even ones who were miles away,” she recalls. This upbringing instilled in her a deep commitment to building lasting relationships and fostering strong, engaged communities—an approach she brings to her development work at St. Mary’s University.

Leadership in Action

Her leadership style is deeply collaborative, ensuring that every effort is purposeful and aligned with the shared goal of making a lasting impact. “From working with the Gala committee to leading our team, I believe in creating space for every voice and perspective, promoting an environment where diversity is not just included but truly embraced.”

Patience’s approach to leadership is also informed by her own experiences as a minority in leadership roles. She understands firsthand the power of allyship and strives to be an advocate for others. “Throughout my career, I’ve had allies who created space for my voice, championed my ideas, and supported my growth,” she reflects. “I strive to be that same advocate for others, ensuring that every voice is valued and heard.”

Her role on St. Mary’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee allows her to contribute to meaningful change on campus and beyond. Patience believes that leadership is about lifting others as you climb, a philosophy she embodies by sharing her story, offering support, and actively seeking opportunities to uplift those around her.

When it comes to balancing work and personal life, Patience views each as a gift from God that supports and enriches the other.

“My work is how I serve — creating opportunities, building relationships, and making an impact. My personal life grounds me and brings joy. Because I see both as part of my greater purpose, I don’t view them as competing forces but as elements that strengthen one another.”

Her advice to young women aspiring to leadership roles, especially in development, is to embrace the power of storytelling and relationships:

“Share your journey, learn from others, and stay intentional about building connections. Lead with purpose, lift others as you climb, and trust that you belong at the table.”

As we approach the President’s Gala, Patience Mbwizhu’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact of community-centered leadership and the importance of creating spaces where all voices are heard.
