A Game Worth Enjoying

A first-year player finds confidence by returning to what made basketball matter.

Brooklyn Bautista grew up in a basketball family. Loving the game herself took a little longer.

What changed it was the people. Teammates became friends. Practices and games became memories. Basketball began offering something she wanted to keep in her life, and eventually something she wanted to pursue seriously.

Now in her first year of eligibility with the Lightning, Brooklyn is working on the part of competition that can be hardest to see from the stands: believing in herself.

Overthinking and carrying mistakes into the next play have been challenges. Her response is to ground herself, remember why she loves basketball, and give enjoyment some space beside the pressure to perform.

Trusting herself is a skill she wants to strengthen this season. Her parents’ hard work keeps her motivated, both to make them proud and to become the person she hopes to be.

The challenge is not simply to tell herself she is confident. It is to keep trusting her game after an error, when overthinking offers a running commentary on what just happened. Brooklyn tries to return her attention to something more useful: the reason she enjoys being out there and the play she can still make.

She has seen how much mindset can affect performance. Giving herself room to enjoy the game is part of becoming mentally tougher, because it helps her stop treating every mistake as an explanation of her ability. A possession can go badly without requiring the rest of the game to follow it.

That person may eventually stand at the front of an elementary classroom. Brooklyn wants to become a teacher and help children grow into good people. Working with younger athletes already gives her a chance to encourage that kind of growth through sport.

The interest fits the way she talks about team life. She wants to be supported, but also to support. She wants people who make her better, and chances to offer encouragement to someone still developing. Teaching would give her another setting in which those exchanges matter.

Her definition of success includes joy, happiness, love, and being proud of the person she has become. It is a generous standard, but one she can begin working toward in ordinary interactions: listen to a coach, encourage a teammate, help a younger player feel they have something to contribute.

At St. Mary’s, she values being around people who challenge her and whom she can support in return. The relationships are part of the opportunity, rather than something to fit around it.

“At the end of the day, it’s just basketball, and I play it because I love it,” she says.

The sentence isn’t an excuse to care less. For Brooklyn, it helps her care in a way that lets her play.

She hopes her eventual legacy includes kindness, coachability, effort, and support for others. Success should contain joy, love, and pride in the person she becomes.

The family introduced her to basketball. The friendships made it hers. This season brings another group of people to grow alongside.
