More Than a Talent Show

An unexpected beginning becomes a serious pursuit, with room for more than one dream.

Cameron McLellan first played basketball for a middle school talent show. The ball was essentially a prop.

Then she kept shooting during rehearsals, and the prop became the point.

She liked making a shot. She liked dribbling. She kept playing, eventually finding club basketball and a level of competition that made her think about what might come next. Travel to the United States put her near university programs and players chasing goals like her own. The possibility became easier to picture.

Transferring to All Saints for Grade 11 brought another step into a more competitive setting. Being named MVP in Grade 12 helped confirm that she had adapted and earned her place.

The move asked her to prove herself in two directions: against stronger opponents, and among players within a program with greater expectations. She had come from a smaller school where basketball was less of a focus. Choosing the new setting meant accepting that challenge before she knew how it would turn out.

The MVP award made the adjustment feel worthwhile. So did recognizing her teammates’ trust. Being someone they could rely on gave her a more immediate sign that the work was taking her somewhere. The game was becoming part of how people knew her, rather than something she happened to enjoy.

One game against St. Francis taught her something an award couldn’t. Early in the contest, a teammate returning from injury broke her leg. After time together waiting for the ambulance, the team returned to the court determined to play for her. Cameron remembers the shared resolve, and what it revealed about the strength of caring for someone beside you.

Now entering her first year of eligibility with the Lightning, she wants to improve her three-point consistency and build strong relationships with new teammates. Staying calm under pressure is a strength she hopes to bring into that process.

Her future includes ambitions in both basketball and veterinary medicine. She wants to see how far the sport can take her while continuing toward becoming a veterinarian.

There is no neat timetable in that wish, and Cameron does not insist there has to be. Professional basketball would be an opportunity she would love to pursue. Veterinary medicine remains a dream with its own importance. She wants to create a life in which the two passions can have their place, even if they occupy different stages.

For now, there is a first university season to learn from. Better outside shooting is a concrete target. Getting to know teammates is another. She sees relationships away from the floor as something that can make the group stronger when the pressure rises. Her own composure is a quality she hopes to add to that environment.

“I do not have to limit myself to just one goal,” she says.

Fashion provides another outlet for expression. Friends give her a way to reset, even over a quick meal.

She hopes people remember someone dependable, supportive, and willing to listen. And she wants to enjoy the practices, games, and trips while they’re happening.

The talent show gave her a basketball. Everything afterward has given her reasons to keep it in her hands.
