Destiny Ledee Gboro

Born in Benin, West Africa, with Nigerian roots, I was taught the value of hard work from a young age. Growing up, I was a late bloomer in basketball, picking up the game at 13 or 14. I remember playing pickup games with friends and my older brother after school, often competing in 1v1s during recess, and quickly developing a passion for the sport.

One of my proudest moments on the court came in my Grade 12 summer, when I scored 45 points in a club game, hitting 9 three-pointers. But another unforgettable moment was my first in-game dunk—a windmill in Grade 11 during a tournament in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. With less than 15 seconds left in the fourth quarter, up by more than 50 points, I seized a fast break, went for it, and slammed it home.

The most inspiring role model in my life has been my mother. A former professional soccer player in Nigeria, she has always supported my basketball journey. Her grit, dedication, and work ethic have shaped who I am today, both on and off the court.

I consider myself an aspiring bookworm, and while I’ve consumed countless audiobooks, I’m excited to dive into the St. Mary’s University library as I continue my academic and athletic journey.

A key aspect of my development as an athlete has been being coachable. I’ve always sought to learn from past coaches and tap into their basketball knowledge. On the court, I stay competitive, bringing positive energy, and giving 100% effort every time I step on the floor. This mentality is something I aim to carry forward in my basketball career.
