Where His Feet Are
The fourth-year guard has learned to recognize an opportunity while he is living it.
Before organized basketball, Jaidon Martin shot socks into hampers. He wore his older brother’s hand-me-down jerseys, watched games with brothers and cousins, and played in neighbourhood parks and community centres.
“Loved it before I even knew I loved it,” he says.
The game became something he wanted to use to support his family, create opportunity, and eventually make a living. Camps and high-level youth competition widened the possibilities. People throughout his community helped him develop, including the janitors he came to know while finding gym time for another workout.
The collegiate route has been considerably less straightforward. A coaching change soon after arriving at an NAIA school in South Dakota disrupted the opportunity he expected. An ankle injury and, later, a tibial fracture interrupted his playing time. He has experienced little time on the floor, limited minutes, leadership responsibility, and the uncertainty of looking for a program to call home.
Those different roles taught him different versions of the game. With limited minutes, he had to find ways to affect winning quickly. With more responsibility, he had to command and lead. While looking for a new program, he had to keep believing he could contribute somewhere, even when an initial conversation did not become an offer.
He also learned to recognize how fragile an opportunity can be. A season can change after an injury or a coaching decision. That awareness makes him more protective of the moments he does have. He wants to be present enough to enjoy playing while it is happening.
He learned to find places where he was valued, and to treat rejection as a next opportunity.
One return still stands out: his first game back in Canada at Holland College. With his younger brother in the stands, Jaidon played 30 minutes, scored 12 consecutive second-half points, and recorded seven assists in a 20-point win. After so much time unable to play, the ordinary act of being on the court carried extraordinary weight.
Now in his fourth year of eligibility with the Lightning, he wants to help his team win and grow as a point guard, leader, and person. Professional basketball remains an ambition. Being present remains the practice.
Outside the game, he owns and serves as creative director of Melaninboyworldwide, creating clothing, films, poetry, and visual art. He also bakes, plays video games, and finds calm in nature and good company.
The creative work gives another dimension to someone who has spent years being evaluated as a basketball player. Clothes, short films, poetry, and visual art offer different ways to express what he sees and cares about. His ambitions include professional sport, but his definition of success also contains family, peace, well-being, and the freedom to share experiences with people he loves.
He tells younger athletes not to compare every stage of their journey with someone else’s. He has lived enough changes to know how misleading that comparison can become. Stay true to yourself, find the work you care about, and keep your feet in the moment available to you.
“The journey is the reward,” he says.
He hopes teammates remember someone dependable, someone who saw them, someone who brought light. The boy with the hamper hoop wanted basketball to take him places. The player he became has learned to appreciate where his feet are now.
