Earning the Next Step

A redshirt year gives a first-year athlete room to work, learn, and help.

Korban Ashley’s basketball story began in Grade 6 with Nelson Hoops, a development program that gave him a place to learn the game.

Coaches and family encouraged him. Teammates gave him another reason to stay. Over time, the game became something he loved partly because of the people he got to play it with.

Now the Nelson, B.C., athlete enters his first year of eligibility at St. Mary’s as a redshirt, with a clear target: work toward a roster spot while contributing to the team in the role he has.

“I am thankful to be a redshirt and am going to work hard for the team,” he says.

He has already learned how frustrating it can be to lose time. Pneumonia kept him out for about six weeks in Grade 11. Returning to practice didn’t mean immediately returning to his old level. His breathing and basketball rhythm needed time to recover.

That experience helped him learn to look for another approach when something becomes difficult. A mistake doesn’t need to dictate the next possession. A setback can require a different solution.

Coming back after pneumonia made patience unavoidable. He could attend practice again before he could perform the way he expected. His breathing needed to recover, and the game needed to feel familiar again. Returning was a process rather than a single date.

The lesson has stayed useful. When something goes wrong now, Korban tries to look at it from another viewpoint, find what he can do about it, and avoid letting emotion make the problem bigger. Moving on from a mistake is a skill he values because the team still needs the next play.

His parents, raising four children, have modelled leadership and dependable support. Their belief that hard work pays off has stayed with him, along with the understanding that nobody else can do his work for him.

Korban enjoys fishing, reading, and spending time with friends. He also has a sweet tooth, with Nerds Gummy Clusters occupying the top spot. Every training routine apparently leaves room for a preference.

He considers encouragement one of his underrated strengths—helping lift a teammate’s mood when the day needs it. That is something he can contribute immediately.

A redshirt year gives that contribution particular importance. There is work to do toward the roster spot he wants, and there are teammates competing now whom he can support. Both belong to being part of the program. Korban can develop his game while also helping make the environment a good one to play in.

He does not define success solely through minutes. He wants to enjoy life on and off the court, feel good about the way he plays, and make friends. His parents’ support helps keep that wider picture available while he tackles the basketball work himself. They have his back, but they cannot do the repetitions for him.

He wants to be remembered as a hard worker and a good teammate. This season gives him daily opportunities to become both, while preparing for the next step he intends to earn.
