“Could I Have Done More?” — The Question That Drives Salome Nuako
Knowing the Next Position
A fourth-year player prepares to help from more than one place on the floor.
Before a game, Salome Nuako reviews every set and play. Then she makes sure she knows at least one position besides her own.
It’s a small window into how she approaches basketball. Being ready means understanding her job well enough to see how it connects to someone else’s.
The extra position turns preparation into a form of awareness. Salome wants to know where the action goes, what the motion requires, and how another player’s responsibility fits beside hers. The team gets more from the play when each person understands more than the single place where she starts it.
Her ambition to reach nationals depends on that kind of connection. A strong individual season would matter, but the destination she describes includes the whole team. Reviewing the sets is one way to make a large goal useful in a small, repeatable task before tipoff.
The game began with her older brother. Watching him play made her want to participate, and by high school she could see her own progress clearly enough to wonder how far it might go.
Now entering her fourth year of eligibility with the Lightning, Salome wants to help the team reach nationals. Beyond graduation, she hopes to play overseas and keep finding the best version of her game.
Chronic knee injuries have required her to build another kind of preparation. Coaches, teammates, and athletic staff have helped her rehabilitate and develop strength. She has learned to rely on that support rather than treat recovery as something she must manage alone.
She also recognizes the mental demands of higher-level competition. Giving full effort helps her move forward with confidence instead of wondering what she held back.
Chronic injury has made the support system especially important. Coaches, teammates, and athletic staff help her work toward recovery and strength, while also reminding her that she is part of a group through the difficult stretches. She has learned to use that expertise rather than make being determined an excuse to handle everything herself.
The same care informs the advice she gives younger players. Be consistent, get the work in, but do it without hurting yourself. She wants dedication to keep opening opportunities, including the overseas basketball she hopes to pursue after graduation. A sustainable approach gives that future ambition somewhere to stand.
“Could I have done more?” has been a question Salome returns to. Her commitment to answering it honestly includes the people and preparation that make sustained effort possible.
Her advice to younger players is to be consistent with workouts while avoiding harm. She wants dedication to remain something they can build on.
Away from the tactical seriousness, there’s a childhood confession: she repeatedly tried to eat Play-Doh when she was very young. “Flashing Lights” would be her walkout song. Neither detail is likely to appear on the scouting report.
Salome wants teammates to remember dedication and hard work. The extra position she studies before tipoff is part of that promise: understand more, arrive ready, and make the knowledge useful when someone needs it.
