Sean Huynh

Born and raised in the north side of Calgary, Alberta, I grew up surrounded by a big, sports-loving family, including 15 cousins who helped shape my passion for basketball. At 12, inspired by their influence, I started taking the game more seriously and joined a club team, where I met Coach Abdell of the women’s program. Training under his guidance sparked my dedication to the sport and strengthened my love for basketball.

One of the biggest challenges in my journey has been overcoming a major injury. During my senior club season, I suffered a dislocated shoulder. Months of rehab seemed promising, but the injury became more serious than I expected, forcing me to stop after only two games in CJBL. Eventually, I underwent surgery to repair my shoulder permanently. My comeback began at STMU’s open runs, and I was offered a redshirt position, allowing me time to work on my strength and get healthier for the game I love.

Outside of basketball, I find peace in reconnecting with nature. I enjoy hiking, especially at sunrise or sunset, both as a way to stay active and improve my jumping ability. Escaping from phones and social media helps me stay mentally focused and balanced, which is vital in my off-season training.

My biggest role models are my older cousins, who have been by my side since day one. I grew up looking to them for guidance, both on and off the court. They taught me to work hard, embrace a “next-play” mentality, and not take things too personally. Their influence and support motivate me every step of the way, showing me that with hard work, I can reach new heights in the game.
