She started because of her height, stayed because of love, and plays now for something bigger than herself.

Every basketball story has a beginning — a driveway, a sibling, a spark. For Valentina Okeke, it started with something simple: you’re tall, you should try basketball.

She did — and something clicked. At first it was just a school sport, a thing to do. But when she joined club ball, the game shifted from hobby to heartbeat. She started to see herself in motion — what she could be, not just what she was.

Then came the moment that rewired everything: the death of Kobe Bryant. “I didn’t know him that well at first,” she says. “But hearing all the stories about him — the work ethic, the mindset — it made me want to be better.” That’s when basketball became personal.

Still, the path wasn’t straight. In high school, Valentina hit the wall every serious athlete meets — the one built out of self-doubt. There were days she wondered if she should even keep playing. But every time she stepped onto the court, something changed. “When I was out there,” she says, “I remembered why I loved it.”

She’ll never forget the championship game during club season — the one where her team came together perfectly, beating a powerhouse squad from Edmonton. “It was the last game of the year,” she says. “We won it together.” That same feeling came back in Grade 10, when she made the travel roster for Edge — a small victory that meant everything. “We had a big roster, and only a few of us got selected. I worked so hard for that.”

That moment taught her the rhythm of improvement — that progress isn’t loud, it’s layered. Every practice, every rep, every hour spent outside of team workouts started to show. “It feels good,” she says. “You can actually see the work paying off.”

Now, she’s chasing consistency — the kind you can build a career on. “When I think about everything I’ve done to get here, it pushes me to keep going,” she says. Her goals are clear: give 100% every time she’s on the court, chase Rookie of the Year, and one day win Nationals with her team. Success, to her, isn’t solo glory — it’s the moment when everyone’s connected, lifting each other up, playing for one purpose.

Ask who shaped her mindset, and her answers come fast: her parents. Her dad, who’s been there since the beginning, reminding her to work when no one’s watching. Her mom, who taught her how to believe again when confidence wavered. “She always brings me back to why I started,” Valentina says. “And how to get out of my own head.”

That’s the story of Valentina Okeke — not just a player in progress, but a person learning how to turn doubt into drive. She may have started because of her height, but she stayed because she found something much stronger: her purpose.
