The Tempo of Progress: How Eva Nickerson Found Her Rhythm
The Trust That Lasts
The fourth-year player wants to build something that will survive the final buzzer.
Eva Nickerson once wanted to attend her older brother’s basketball game so badly that being unable to go ended in a tantrum—and a timeout lasting the entire game.
Before basketball became her own work, it was already somewhere she wanted to be.
Her dad coached. Her brother played. Watching them made the sport part of family life, and gave Eva a place to start imagining herself in it.
Her first university season complicated that picture. Balancing school with the physical and mental demands of college basketball was difficult enough that she considered quitting. Looking back now, she is grateful for how much that period pushed her to grow.
The transition asked her to manage more than playing against stronger athletes. There was school to keep up with, a longer and more demanding basketball routine, and the mental effort of deciding she could remain in it. The sport she had loved watching as a child required her to find another kind of commitment as a university player.
Her gratitude now does not make the beginning less difficult. It gives the beginning a place in what followed. She stayed long enough for the challenge to become part of her development, and can look back with a clearer understanding of what those early months helped teach her.
Entering her fourth year of eligibility with the Lightning, Eva measures success through the team and community built around the game. Trust matters because it improves how people play together, but its value reaches further.
“The sport will eventually end, but the relationships made can last a lifetime.”
She wants people who know they have each other’s backs. Winning can follow from that connection. The connection itself remains worth building.
That is a substantial goal in a competitive environment. Trust affects the way players communicate, respond to errors, and work through difficult stretches together. Eva wants those habits to produce a team that feels dependable to the people inside it. The value will continue after the final season when the basketball schedule no longer keeps everyone in the same place.
“Motivation comes and goes,” she says.
Her emphasis on discipline sits naturally beside that view of community. Being someone others can count on cannot depend entirely on feeling inspired that morning. The group benefits when a player keeps doing the work and offering support through the less exciting days, too.
The women she has played alongside have offered examples of both high-level basketball and character. Eva wants to work toward leaving the kind of impact they left at St. Mary’s.
Music helps her find the right pace along the way. Piano has been part of her life since childhood, and now offers a way to settle before a difficult game or unwind after practice. The piano gives her a familiar rhythm to return to when the day needs to settle.
Her advice to younger athletes has grown equally steady: stay consistent. Motivation comes and goes. Discipline gives you something to rely on when it does.
The child in timeout wanted to be where basketball was happening. The fourth-year player has a different responsibility now: help make that place somewhere others can trust, belong, and remember fondly when the games are over.
