Called by Name: Reflecting on the Annual Campus Ministry Retreat

This year, St. Mary’s University’s Campus Ministry hosted its annual retreat weekend, guided by the theme “Called by Name.” Students from St. Mary’s, along with members of St. Francis Xavier Chaplaincy from Calgary and Lethbridge, gathered for a weekend filled with prayer, relaxation, and fun at Salem Acres Bible Camp.

The retreat’s sessions were led by Fr. Cristino Bouvette, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Strathmore and Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Calgary. Fr. Cristino focused on the importance of recognizing our true identities, embracing the gift of freedom, and persevering through life’s challenges. To make his talks even more engaging, he incorporated Disney clips, blending nostalgia with meaningful life lessons that resonated deeply with attendees.

For many students, the retreat came at the perfect time, offering a much-needed break from the demands of the semester. First-year St. Mary’s student Aby Vandanath shared how the retreat helped refresh him in his own faith and provided a fresh perspective on life amidst the busy college routine:

“I didn’t really know what I was getting into for the weekend, but at the end of it, I was so grateful because not only was it a time for Christ-centered moments, like being in adoration, but there was fellowship and time that we could spend with one another. I really saw Jesus in those moments, spending time with people I go to university with, getting to know them and letting myself be known.”

The Called by Name retreat is one of many ways that our Campus Ministry cares for the many students at St. Mary’s.  There are small groups open to all to discuss bigger questions in life, coffee houses, and even bonfires. All are welcome to join in weekly Wednesday mass at 11:30AM at McGivney Hall, M100, followed by food and fellowship.
