Faculty Bio
Dr. Kirsten Schut
Assistant Professor, History
Dr. Kirsten “Kirsty” Schut, a Medieval Historian, comes to us from Nova Scotia, where she is a Faculty Fellow with the Foundation Year Program at the University of King’s College; this experience, in itself, gives her excellent knowledge of the liberal arts and core programming. She also teaches undergraduate courses in Medieval history and Religion at Dalhousie University. She holds a Bachelor of Humanities from Carleton University and an MA and PhD from the Centre of Medieval Studies in Toronto. Dr. Schut’s research concentrates on intellectual and religious history, with a focus on 14th-century theology, monasticism, and histories of death and dying. Her publication record and SSHRC grant position her as an active and successful researcher. Dr. Schut’s focus—Medieval History—has proven to be very popular with students; her research and teaching will draw well both within the university and externally. Dr. Schut is poised to teach a full load of History courses, and has exciting new courses like one on the Virgin Mary or one that features our St. John’s Bible, that she is prepared to develop. Notably, she may also teach Religious Studies and Latin courses, given her expertise. She finds both our Catholic and Liberal Arts identity appealing and is eager to contribute meaningfully and sustainably to both. She believes St. Mary’s is dedicated to making better people and wants to be part of that endeavor.
