From Student to Steward: Cara Goode’s Journey of Giving

Philanthropy isn’t just for those with a net worth in the hundreds of millions; it’s about the generosity of spirit that can be found in people from all walks of life. On November 15, National Philanthropy Day, we recognize those whose acts of giving—whether through personal time or financial investment—make a meaningful impact on their communities. At St. Mary’s, we celebrate one of our own, Cara Goode, a proud alumna, dedicated employee, and generous donor who exemplifies the true essence of philanthropy.

Cara’s journey with St. Mary’s began as a student. She pursued her Bachelor of Arts in History, earning the prestigious Willis & Betty O’Leary Undergraduate Degree Scholarship for achieving the highest GPA in the History Program. Graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2016 while balancing work and motherhood, Cara’s academic success was matched by her strong passion of cultivating a sense of community. As a student ambassador, she was a guiding presence for students, ensuring they felt both welcomed and supported in their time at St. Mary’s.

In 2022, Cara returned to St. Mary’s as the Enrolment Services Officer, where she serves as the first point of contact for students and visitors. Her warm, welcoming demeanor has made her a valued figure on campus, and she even recently presented at the Alberta Services for Students Conference (ASSC), sharing her insights to an array of student service professionals on how to create an inclusive and personable environment.

When asked about her decision to start donating to St. Mary’s as an alumna, Cara said simply, “I heard there was a need, and I wanted to help.” Looking toward the future, Cara hopes to see St. Mary’s continually grow its capacity to welcome more students through its halls, sharing the transformative experience she had here with even more individuals.

“Philanthropy is more than just giving – it’s time, talent, and treasure” Cara says. Her contributions to the university, both professionally and financially, make this institution what it is today. Today, we celebrate people like Cara for the difference they continue to make on the St. Mary’s community and beyond.
