His dad played college ball in the UK, his older brother was already hooping on a club team, and one day his dad decided it was time to “recruit” him. “That’s how I started,” Lucas says. “My dad loved the game — it kind of just became ours.”

From there, the addiction set in. The highlight reels, the NBA stars, the dream of becoming one of those names you look up instead of look up to. Somewhere between watching pros and chasing his brother around practice, he realized: this sport could actually change his life.

His most unforgettable game came against his hometown rival — the kind of matchup that defines every small-town basketball legend. “Foothills Comp High School,” he says, grinning. “Overtime win. Dropped 27 with nine threes.” It’s the type of story that’ll follow him forever, and he doesn’t seem to mind.

But if there’s a single moment that mattered more, it was the day he got recruited to play post-secondary ball. “That was it,” he says. “That was years of work — getting shots up every day, staying in shape, proving I could run with the guys.” You can hear the pride in his voice when he talks about how it’s starting to pay off. “I feel quicker, stronger, more confident. It’s all coming together.”

Still, what drives him most now isn’t glory — it’s doubt. “The people who made fun of me last season, the ones who don’t think I’m good enough,” he says. “That’s what keeps me pushing.” His goal this year is all about composure: controlling the pace, making the right reads, and staying locked in through mistakes. The long-term vision? “Be the best player in the ACAC,” he says, without flinching.

Ask him who helped shape his mindset and you’ll get a mix of family and teammates. His dad, first — calm, forgiving, patient. “He’s how I want to be,” Lucas says. Then there’s Camden McDougall, who taught him the value of emotional control: “Being composed is already half the battle.” And Isaiah McDonald, whose relentlessness rubbed off on him. “Watching him go all out, every play, that changed how I approached the game,” he says.

Off the court, Lucas has learned something that too many players miss: connections matter. “Don’t do it alone,” he says. “Ask for help, learn from others, make relationships. You never know where they’ll take you.”

And when you ask how he wants to be remembered, his answer lands with that perfect mix of humility and humor:

“As that one really cool white guy with crazy bounce who could shoot the lights out — and someone who had wisdom, who wasn’t afraid to share it.”
