What the Sixth Seed Could Do

A first-year player carries an underdog run and years of encouragement into college basketball.

Tolu Koledoye’s Grade 11 team entered the playoffs sixth out of eight teams. They reached the city final.

They didn’t win the championship. She still considers the run a major accomplishment, because she knows what it meant for the group to get there.

Some seasons give you a trophy. Others give you a different idea of what your team is capable of. Tolu carries that second kind of memory into her first year of eligibility with the Lightning.

The seed said where the team had started. Reaching the final showed where it had managed to go. Tolu values the accomplishment even without the championship result, because getting there asked the group to exceed the expectation attached to its position.

That experience gives her a useful kind of confidence entering college basketball. A team’s possibilities are not always fully described by how it looks before the competition begins. There is still work to do, a performance to build, and a chance to change the way the group is seen.

Basketball first caught her attention in elementary school, watching Kyle Lowry play for the Raptors. Golden State games became regular viewing, Stephen Curry became her favourite player, and the 2017 NBA Finals helped turn interest into a lasting love of the sport.

There was also someone much closer to home helping it grow. Her high school coach, Mrs. Stewart, has been by her side since elementary school, influencing the person as well as the player.

That kind of continuity matters. A coach who remembers where you began can help make the next stage feel possible.

Mrs. Stewart has been present through years when Tolu was learning both basketball and the person she wanted to be around it. Tolu credits her with shaping life off the court as well as the game on it. The influence lasts because it has been repeated across more than one season.

The television players offered excitement and a style of basketball to admire. A teacher and coach offered something closer: support that could reach Tolu’s actual day. Her development contains both, the inspiration to love the sport and the steady presence that helped her continue playing it.

Now she has a new team to join and another stage to learn, while carrying the benefit of someone who has been beside her since elementary school.

Tolu’s motivation is to become the best version of herself through work and effort, including when progress feels difficult. She understands that wanting improvement has to translate into doing something about it.

Away from basketball, she enjoys cooking and video games. Friends and family help her wind down after demanding days. Before games, music helps her focus.

The player watching the NBA on television now has a collegiate opportunity of her own. She brings admiration for the game’s possibilities alongside the experience of helping a lower-seeded team exceed expectations.

That city final showed her what a group could accomplish together. This season gives her another group, another level, and another chance to find out.
