The Standard He Sets

The third-year runner keeps his expectations high—and his recovery routine surprisingly peaceful.

Vince Barcelos didn’t finish school and decide competition had run its course. He finished school and missed it.

He had spent his childhood playing competitive sports. Once that structure disappeared, he wanted somewhere to put the same appetite. Indoor track at St. Mary’s gave him a place to compete again.

“To compete and to win,” he says.

That qualification tells you plenty. Vince likes a challenge with a result attached. Entering his third year of eligibility, the Okotoks athlete continues to hold himself to a high standard because he believes in what he can achieve.

School sport had given his competitive drive somewhere to go. After graduation, he still wanted the contest, the preparation, and the chance to discover whether his best would be enough. St. Mary’s gave him a way to keep asking.

His competitive background also includes powerlifting. Being selected to represent Canada at the North American Championships remains an achievement he is particularly proud of. The selection made the accumulated work feel worthwhile: training sessions, meets, and setbacks all contributing to the opportunity.

Track gives him a different test, but the satisfaction of preparation leading somewhere is familiar. He wants to bring the same seriousness to finding out what he can achieve here.

His motivation comes primarily from within. He does not describe needing someone else to convince him he can improve. Holding himself to a standard is the point: the expectation is his, and so is the responsibility to do something about it.

On difficult days, his approach is direct: go out and do the work. He doesn’t describe an elaborate negotiation with motivation. There is something to do, and he intends to do it.

His understanding of progress leaves more room for uncertainty. Setbacks and injuries require him to trust the process and remember that development doesn’t always move in a straight line. High expectations can survive an uneven week. They just need perspective.

“Progress isn’t always linear,” he says.

It’s an important reminder for someone who enjoys winning. Improvement occasionally arrives disguised as patience.

There is a tension worth respecting in that combination. Vince wants to act, train, compete. He also knows that a setback cannot always be solved by demanding an immediate result. Trusting the process means accepting a stretch that does not look like the progress he pictured, while continuing to take it seriously.

He says he has to remind himself of that repeatedly. The repetition is part of the honesty in his answer. Understanding patience once does not mean it becomes easy to practice every time. A competitive person can learn perspective and still need to retrieve it after the next frustrating day.

Away from training, Vince is into Pokémon cards. Collecting gives that attention to detail another outlet, and a conversation topic that doesn’t require a stopwatch.

Before races, the competitive edge gets a quieter companion: a hot Epsom salt bath and a face mask. The ritual is familiar, restorative, and entirely his own. Wanting to beat people on the track doesn’t prevent a person from appreciating a peaceful evening beforehand.

Vince came back to organized competition because he still wanted to find out what he could do. This season gives him another answer to pursue—and another reason to hold himself to the standard he set.
