St. Mary’s University has strengthened its commitment to student wellness and belonging by signing the Recovery on Campus (ROC) pledge.

On September 3, 2026 President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Scott Morrison and Students’ Association President Darcy Smereka signed the pledge on behalf of the University, affirming St. Mary’s commitment to fostering a recovery-safe campus where individuals in recovery are welcomed, supported, and empowered to thrive.
Recovery on Campus is an initiative that helps post-secondary institutions create environments where people in recovery feel safe, valued, and connected. Through education, awareness, and collaboration, the initiative provides institutions with tools and resources to reduce stigma and build communities where recovery is supported.
The commitment reflects St. Mary’s mission to educate the whole person and its Catholic values of compassion, dignity, and service.
“Student success extends beyond the classroom,” said Kathryn Strilchuk, Director of Student Success. “It means creating a campus where every student feels supported and knows they belong. By signing the Recovery on Campus pledge, we are reaffirming our commitment to fostering an environment where individuals in recovery are treated with compassion, respect, and understanding. We want every member of our community to know that support is available and that no one has to navigate their journey alone.”

The pledge builds on the University’s ongoing efforts to promote student wellbeing through services and initiatives that support students academically, personally, and spiritually. It also reinforces St. Mary’s commitment to cultivating a campus culture where seeking help is encouraged and every student is met with care and respect.
“We are committed to fostering a culture where every student knows they matter and that they belong,” said Darcy Smereka, Associate Vice-President, Student Success. “This commitment strengthens our ability to meet students where they are and provide support that reflects compassion, dignity, and hope. Recovery looks different for every individual, and initiatives like Recovery on Campus help ensure our community is one where students feel welcomed and supported throughout their journey.”
St. Mary’s University is proud to join a growing network of post-secondary institutions committed to supporting individuals in recovery and creating campuses where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
