From St. Mary’s to Medical School: Amin Aboultaif’s Journey of Purpose

From a young age, Amin Aboultaif was captivated by science—drawn to the mysteries of the human body and the power of research to improve lives. With a natural talent for STEM and a clear vision of becoming a medical doctor, Amin began his journey at St. Mary’s University in the fall of 2019.

At St. Mary’s, Amin majored in Biology with a minor in Psychology. His academic excellence was evident from the start—earning the First Calgary Scholarship, two Jason Lang Scholarships, and three placements on the Dean’s List.

“These milestones reminded me that success comes from persistence, hard work, and the support of a community that truly believes in you,” he reflects.

That community support became a defining part of Amin’s experience. Today, he’s in his third year of medical school at the Royal College of Surgeons in Bahrain—an accomplishment he credits in part to the personalized guidance he received at St. Mary’s.

“During my time at St. Mary’s, one of the academic advisors personally sat down with me to review my experiences and strengthen my application profile. That one-on-one support not only helped me present myself as a strong candidate on paper but also gave me the confidence to apply to medical school,” says Amin.

It wasn’t just advising that shaped his confidence. St. Mary’s close-knit classrooms and professor mentorship left a lasting impact. “Professors weren’t just teachers—they were mentors who knew us by name and genuinely cared about our growth. Their encouragement helped me take on challenges I never thought I could.”

For students dreaming of medical school, Amin shares this advice: “Personal growth, community involvement, and emotional intelligence are just as important as academics. Join clubs, volunteer, and get involved. Those experiences teach empathy, leadership, and teamwork in ways textbooks can’t. St. Mary’s taught me that success is about balance—striving for excellence while growing as a person.”

As a university, we are incredibly proud of alumni like Amin—individuals who pair academic achievement with finding purpose, compassion, and a commitment to serving others.

Amin received the support he needed to reach medical school, and now he wants to give back. If you’re aspiring to a future in medicine, he welcomes you to connect with him for guidance or advice.
