The St. Mary’s University community is deeply saddened by the passing of Shirley (Thielen) Valentine, a cherished friend and long-time supporter whose faith, generosity, and vision helped shape the very heart of our university. Shirley passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025, at the age of 91.
Born June 10, 1934, in Lethbridge, Alberta, Shirley was the second daughter of Stephen and Frances Thielen. Growing up on the family farm, she developed a strong work ethic, a deep devotion to faith, and a lasting commitment to community—qualities that defined her life. After earning a softball scholarship to study in St. Louis, she began a career in nursing before dedicating herself to community service, raising six children, and taking on leadership roles that reflected her compassionate heart and tireless spirit.
Together with her husband Ted, Shirley was part of the foundation upon which St. Mary’s University was built. The Valentine family’s connection to St. Mary’s began with the first steering committee meeting in 1986 to establish a Catholic college in Calgary and continued through service on the inaugural Board of Governors in 1987. Over the decades, the family’s support has touched nearly every aspect of campus life—from scholarships and bursaries to athletics and student access initiatives. Shirley’s establishment of the St. Isidore Bursary, created to support students from rural communities pursuing education degrees, stands as a lasting symbol of her belief in opportunity through education and her commitment to service.
Shirley lived a life of energy, kindness, and faith. As a nurse-educator, she cared deeply for others; as a volunteer, she extended that care to communities around the world through immunization programs; and as a mother and grandmother, she built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and grace. Her generosity of spirit, rooted in her deep Catholic faith, continues to inspire all who were fortunate to know her and those whose lives will be enriched by her enduring legacy.
The St. Mary’s University community extends heartfelt condolences to Shirley’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the entire Valentine family. Her friendship and generosity have left an indelible mark on our institution, and her legacy will continue to shine through the students whose lives are transformed by the opportunities she helped create.
May she rest in peace in the light of God’s eternal love. In lumine tuo videbimus lumen – In Your light we shall see light.
