The 2025 National Gathering of Elders brought together over 10,000 Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Survivors, youth, and leaders from across Canada in a powerful celebration of culture, connection, and resilience.

The week began with an Intertribal of dignitaries proudly carrying their Nation flags from coast to coast. Participants joined forum sessions, connected with youth, explored vendor halls showcasing local Indigenous artisans, and took part in daily 50/50 draws—all while sharing stories, songs, and laughter that filled the venue with unity and spirit.

By the conclusion of the Gathering, a series of reflections and discussions were brought together into nine central themes that captured the essence of the week’s conversations:

Each theme was shaped by the wisdom shared in every session—offering a collective vision of hope, learning, and healing for future generations.

Elder voices resonated throughout the Gathering:

“We are here as a family – our responsibility is how we care for one another.”
Elder Willard Pine, Manitoba

“Reconciliation means nothing without action.”
Elder Marie Stand, Northern Saskatchewan

“Our language is still alive; our ceremonies are still alive.”

Reflecting on the experience, I was deeply moved by the unity and pride of each Nation represented. Listening to the stories of Residential School Survivors, witnessing ceremony, and standing among thousands of Elders and youth filled me with humility and hope.

The Gathering reaffirmed the importance of resilience, responsibility, and community-led practices grounded in traditional teachings. Moving forward with reciprocity, knowledge, and understanding—and doing things in a good way—remains essential for both Self and Allyship.
