St. Mary’s University recently partnered with Golden Homes and the St. Francis Xavier Chaplaincy to sponsor a Feed the Hungry meal on Sunday, October 26, extending compassion and community care beyond campus.

Feed the Hungry, a long-standing program of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary, has been serving warm, family-style meals since 1993. Every Sunday, the program provides a sit-down lunch in an atmosphere of dignity, safety, and respect. With the help of more than 1,600 volunteers each year, Feed the Hungry serves over 17,000 meals annually to Calgarians in need.
Early that Sunday, dedicated volunteers from St. Mary’s University arrived to prepare meals and set up the dining area for guests. John Benedict Carandang, a second-year Psychology student, shared that his personal faith motivated to serve at Feed the Hungry, “I simply wanted to serve because Christ first served us.” The Sunday was a great opportunity for John to grow closer with his peers from St. Mary’s and the wider community, “This brought us closer together as a Catholic community, friends, and students.”
St. Mary’s University extends heartfelt thanks to Golden Homes and the St. Francis Xavier Chaplaincy for their generosity and shared commitment to serving others.
At St. Mary’s, addressing food insecurity remains a key priority. Through initiatives such as the annual StMU (S)cares Away Hunger food drive and Vinny’s Market, located in McGivney Hall (M108), the university continues to support students and community members facing food challenges.
Opened in partnership with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Vinny’s Market offers free snacks and groceries to students in need — a tangible reminder of St. Mary’s mission to nurture both the mind and the heart.
