A Season of Triumphs 

In a remarkable display of talent and determination, the St. Mary’s University (StMU) Lightning Women’s Basketball team clinched their first-ever national silver medal at the 2025 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championship. This historic achievement has not only elevated the team’s status but also ignited a wave of pride and celebration within the StMU community.

The Lightning’s journey to the national stage was paved with significant milestones. Under the leadership of first-year head coach Abdell Farag, the team showcased exceptional skill and resilience throughout the season. Their efforts culminated in a silver medal at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championship, catapulting them to a spot at nationals. Farag commented, “Our journey this season has been nothing short of inspiring. The players’ commitment and perseverance have paved the way for this historic silver medal.”  

A standout contributor to the team’s success was senior guard Maitlynn Miller, who was honored as the 2025 CCAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Year. Miller’s performance was instrumental, leading the team in scoring, rebounding, steals, and assists, and exemplifying leadership on and off the court.  

The national championship game was a testament to the Lightning’s tenacity. Facing formidable opponents, the team delivered a performance that resonated with fans and critics alike. Kendall Russell’s outstanding play earned her the Player of the Game honours, reflecting the depth of talent within the squad. Reflecting on the team’s journey, Russell remarked, “Our team’s resilience and dedication have been extraordinary. This silver medal is a testament to our hard work and spirit.”  

The Lightning’s success extended beyond the court, fostering a sense of unity and pride within the StMU community. The university organized a watch party for the championship game, bringing together students, faculty, staff, and alumni to support the team. The atmosphere was electric, with attendees donning the university’s colors and cheering passionately for every play. 

Community Excitement 

Social media platforms buzzed with excitement as community members shared their support and congratulations. The official StMU Lightning Athletics Instagram account posted, “Congratulations to the St. Mary’s Lightning on earning the 2025 CCAA Women’s Basketball National silver medal! Your hard work and dedication have made us all proud.”  

Students who attended the watch party expressed their enthusiasm, with one attendee commenting, “Watching the game with everyone was an unforgettable experience. The energy in the room was incredible, and we’re so proud of our team!” 

Looking Ahead 

To honor the team’s achievements, St. Mary’s University has planned the Lightning Athletics Awards Banquet on April 3, 2025. This event will celebrate the accomplishments of all athletic teams, with a special focus on the women’s basketball team’s historic season.   

The Lightning’s journey has not only set a new benchmark for athletic excellence at StMU but has also strengthened the bond within the university community. Their story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that with hard work, unity, and unwavering support, remarkable achievements are possible.
