Faculty Bio
Dr. Kyle Dase
Assistant Professor, English (Research-Stream)
Dr. Kyle Dase is an Early Modernist who completed his BA in Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance Studies, as well as his MA and his PhD at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr.Dase also has an MSc in Digital Humanities. This varied background and wide variety of skills earned him a number of post-doctorates, including his current posting in the Electronic Textual Cultures Lab at the University of Victoria. Dr. Dase is a seasoned teacher who will comfortably but passionately teach a broad range of courses for StMU, from first year surveys and early and late Medieval literature to Medieval Mystics, New Media, Major Authors and many more. He is also excited to add new courses to the offerings, which are sure to be a big draw: subjects like Game Studies, as well as Literature and AI. Dr. Dase is also an excellent researcher. HIs scholarly work engages poetry and the reception of classical friendship, materiality studies, and digital humanities. His focus on sociability and how we can use digital editing to illuminate underappreciated texts will surely attract students, and his more recent foray into AI and our relationship with it will also garner interest from students and staff alike. Dr. Dase’s “infectious positivity,” as one committee member put it, makes him a great fit for English and for the University. Another committee member confidently declared, “students will love him.” In his interview, he said that one of the values of English is to create a flexible mind, and, when reflecting on how to best accommodate students, he follows the adage “teach the student not the class.” Dr. Dase deeply understands the discipline’s importance within the Liberal Arts at a Catholic University. This, combined with his love for literature, bodes well for his stable, joyous, and impactful future here.
