The Work Works: The Rise (and Vibe) of Angelo Santiago

From 40-point birthdays to Pokémon cards and Shawn Michaels’ entrance music, Angelo’s story is equal parts grind, swagger, and pure love of the game.

Some people fall into basketball. Angelo Santiago was born into it. He’s been playing since he was five — mostly because, in his house, not playing wasn’t really an option. His mom was a superfan, his dad and siblings all hooped, and dinner conversations probably sounded like postgame pressers. “My whole family was crazy for basketball,” he laughs. “It was basically in the air.”

The moment it turned serious came one night in high school — a family meeting, but the good kind. His brother and dad sat him down and told him something that stuck: you’ve got real potential, if you put the work behind it. It wasn’t hype; it was a challenge. From then on, he treated the game like a full-time job.

And the work? It paid off. His unforgettable game came on his birthday in Grade 12 — a tournament, a crowd, and one ridiculous stat line: a 40-point triple-double. “That was the night I realized what I was capable of,” he says.

But the real full-circle moment came later — seeing his name listed as one of the top 20 players in his 2018 class. “I didn’t play for a great team,” he says. “So when I saw my name up there with those guys, it just showed me that the work works.” No politics, no hype machine — just grind and proof.

Now, playing post-secondary basketball feels like both a reward and a responsibility. “Not a lot of people get this chance,” Angelo says. “That’s what keeps me going.” His goal this season is simple and unapologetic: win gold and earn All-Conference honors. Success, to him, isn’t complicated — it’s the image of his team on top, confetti and all.

He’s not superstitious, but he is well-rested — his only real pregame ritual. “No lucky socks, no weird routines,” he jokes. “I just make sure I slept.”

That said, there’s one thing about Angelo that fans never expect: his Pokémon card collection, which is worth around $5,000. “Yeah,” he says, grinning. “I’ve got some rare ones.”

And if he had a walkout song? No contest. It’s “Sexy Boy” by Shawn Michaels, the old WWE entrance theme — the perfect mix of tongue-in-cheek confidence and alter-ego swagger. “It’s a whole vibe,” he says. “Sometimes you’ve just got to believe your own hype.”

That’s the duality of Angelo Santiago — the guy who works like he’s still trying to prove something, but plays like he already has. The grind is real. The confidence is earned. And somewhere between the jump shots and the trading cards, he’s building a story that’s entirely his own.
